Many people often associate spring as the only time to plant flowers in their gardens. They may be surprised to find that fall can actually be a great time as well. While not all flowers are ideal to plant during fall certain ones can.
Bulbs are one type of flower that is perfect for planting in the fall. This is because they need vernalization to plant. Vernalization is the process of exposing seeds or plants to low temperatures in order to enhance seed production and stimulate flowering. If plating bulbs in the fall, make sure to select bulbs that will work in for the Dallas climate and area. Bulbs you may want to consider are narcissus bulbs, tulips, lilies and amaryllis. To protect your bulbs from squirrels or other critters from running off with them, lay down chicken wire after planting and cover with mulch.
If thinking about planting trees or shrubs, many deciduous plants are the perfect candidates for fall planting. Many of these type of plants will go dormant in the winter, but still allow for the plant to root. Make sure that when planting the temperatures remain around or above 40 degrees.
By planting in the fall, you can give your spring garden a nice head start and you can free up your time in the spring to focus on the more demanding plants. Before planting in the fall, make sure that the ground is not regularly freezing, if it is you won’t find much success and would be best advised to wait for spring.
