When purchasing roses to plant in your garden, one option is buying bare root roses. When purchasing bare root roses, there are certain things that you need to look out for to ensure that they grow correctly.

Many gardeners fail to realize this and find that no matter how well they prepare their planting area that the rose bush just fails to grow. They then tend to blame their lack of gardening skill instead of knowing what the true problem may be. One of the most common problems that  happens when buying a bare root rose plant is that the roots are dried out.

When purchasing a bare root plant it may be hard to tell if the roots are completely dried out. This is because the bare root rose already looks like the plant is dead. There are no leaves on the bush, so you need to rely on the appearance of the bark to tell the healthiness of the plant. When examining the bark, it needs to have a bit of green to its color and should feel soft when you touch it.

If the bark doesn’t have any green to it and it feels hard to the touch, it is a very likely that the plant is either dying or is dead. Another thing that can help you to tell if the rose plant isn’t as healthy as it should be is if there are fine lines on the stem of the plant. These lines appear on the plant when the bark shrinks due to low moisture.
